Born in Hartford, Connecticut 8/2/1915; died 3/5/1990 of cancer in Falmouth, Maine. Married and divorced to Barbara Leeds (1941-1950); actress Bette Davis (1950-1960). He began acting on stage in 1937, but it wasn't until he was serving in the Army during WWII (1941-1945), that he made his 1944 screen debut in Winged Victory.
