The V-Disc (V for Victory) initiative was one of several efforts by the entertainment industry to raise the morale of our boys fighting overseas during WWII. The high quality discs featured material which could not be heard stateside. The artists involved in the project had good reason to put forth special effort for V-Disc recordings. Not only were they going to support the troops, but a strike by the American Federation of Musicians against the major recording studios had brought the recording industry to a virtual halt. V-Discs were one of the few outlets that musicians had to record their music. The Federation allowed the recordings to take place with the understanding that they would not be available on the civilian market. Many artists, realizing that these were very special sessions, took the opportunity to expand and experiment creatively, and their V-Discs were some of the best recorded music of their careers.
