Spoiler : The Singing Walls is one of my all-time favorite old-time radio Suspense episodes, and it features excellent performances from its stars, Preston Foster, as a police detective, and Dane Clark as his somewhat younger, less sophisticated brother-in-law, whose strange tale of waking up in a place featuring "singing walls" (an orchestra playing a piece for a harmonica, which provide a perfect "accompaniment" to the episode itself), hence the title. But this isn't what the story is about. It's more like bookends. The writing for this adaptation of a Cornell Woolrich story, is outstanding, and it plays well, with two sympathetic lead characters, both good guys, trying to find out the truth of what happened to one of them after a night of heavy drinking. It's a tense episode, and it moves quickly, though it never feels rushed. I found it tense and engaging from start to finish, and it makes me wish that there were more things like it on the radio and television these days. Solid, professional storytelling, featuring likeable players, and original and imaginative f/x, such as they can be called, not gimmicks, which enhance the story, don't draw special attention to themselves.
