He has just finished eating and is sipping his coffee when a slight noise at the front door catches his ear. Swiftly, too swiftly for a quiet little man, he springs up and dashes through to the small hallway and flings open the door. There is no-one in sight. And, as if he knew what he would find, he shuts the door and turns to the hat-stand in the hall. An envelope has been placed there. |
