Broadcasters and sponsors tried to strike a balance between their public service mission of providing information necessary for their public service mission and creating the entertainment that created profits (and the public tuned in to hear). In actuality, as serious as the topics were, most news programs were as much about entertainment as they were information. It is only natural that a show like Armstrong’s Theater Of Today would combine the two functions. The Saturday noontime broadcast opened with George Bryan reading news reports followed by announcer Tom Shirley introducing a drama featuring motion picture talent. Commercial messages are read by the Armstrong Quaker Girl.
