Wow Orson Welles wow Lucille Fletcher what a wonderfully written script the ending was surprising

It's interesting to know that Louise Fletcher went on to do the Twilight zone episode number 16 The Hitchhiker with two differences delete character is played by Inger Stevenson and the hitchhiker that gets picked up is played by a man a sailor played by Adams Williams both versions are great.
