Spoiler : I just heard Squad Cars for the first time a couple of months ago, and just recently made an effort to track down and listen to all available episodes. Squad Cars is obviously a big name programme in its native South Africa, the closest simile I can find for the UK listener would be to imagine a radio version of "The Sweeney" or "Z Cars". Since SA didn't get TV until 1976, radio was a major outlet for drama way after countries such as the US had abandoned it. Which is why we get a slice of police life from 1967 onwards into the late 70s. Squad Cars stands up well even today, and you'll probably be like me - having Google Maps open so we can "see" where each incident is taking place, and names such as Hillbrow, Brixton, Berea, and even street names, come to life through this well-written and acted tense drama. Okay, we can nitpick a bit; you notice the actors being rotated, changing accents with each different character, giving the feeling that there was a limited pool of talent available. And although we avoid this when talking about OTR, the historic political situation cannot entirely be ignored. But if you can take it for what it is: a slice of life police drama from a country that is still a mystery to many of us, you'll find yourself getting quickly sucked into the action and enjoying the different situations. And you'll keep Google Maps open too...

Spoiler : Hass all of the programs that exist in our archive of this great South African police series. This series is right up there with American programs such as Dragnet.

Spoiler : Such fond memories. My brother and I loved listening on a Friday night with ou grandparents. It was Grandads favourite show. Surely the dates are incorrect because Gramps passed away in 1965 and my husband also recalls listening to the show as a child and we were married in 1966. So the dates don't make sense. Love to hear from you.
