After his WWII Navy service, O'Neill combined the Yankee Network, a radio chain owned by his father's General Tire and Rubber Company with WNAC-TV, forming General Teleradio. In the early 1950's he created a program (Million Dollar Movie) on WOR-TV that presented feature Hollywood movies daily and four times on weekends. He began buying rights to movies, then syndicated them to other television stations. In 1954 he bought RKO Pictures complete film library from owner Howard Hughes for a reported 25 million dollars and renamed the company to RKO General, and remained active with the company until 1985. O'Neill was also a pioneer in pay television.
