Spoiler : Born in Jamaica, New York 5/14/1902; died 4/16/1958 of a heart attack in Studio City, California. Son of author Rupert Hughes. Educated at St John's Manlius Military Academy and Mercersburg Academy. He began his career working as a clerk at The Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco, where he began subing on Anson Weeks' dance band remotes for the regular announcer. After deciding to pursue a career in broadcasting, he began working at KORE-Eugene, Oregon. He moved to KFRC-San Francisco in 1932, and in 1933 joined the staff of NBC in Hollywood as a newscaster. In 1937, he was commentating on a series of sports for KNX in Hollywood sponsored by Kelloggs. News commentator on NBC-RED- San Francisco (1938-1940).
