After practicing law for two years, he taught at Harvard and Middlebury College in Vermont. He moved to New York City in 1928 to work in radio. He made his radio debut in an obscure comedy program called Embarassing Moments in History.

He had several radio shows in the 1930s, all with "Cuckoo" in the name. Eventually he got into network management. In the late 1940s he was a writer for the comedy team of Bob and Ray (where he stayed until he died suddenly on his 54th birthday). His widow, Lenora (Lee), eventually married Bob Elliott and is the mother of Chris Elliott.
