Carlin began his broadcasting career as an announcer at WEAF-New York in 1922, then he was programing director at NBC-Radio from 1925 to 1944 when he became vice president of programming at Mutual until 1949 when he began working in television until his retirement in 1964. Carlin is credite by some sources with the development of the NBC Chimes. Announcer for NBC-Radio programs including The Goodrich Silvertown Cord Orchestra beginning in 1926; Atwater Kent Hour (1926-1931); Clicquot Club Eskimos (1926?-1936?); Palmolive Hour (1927- 1931); Roxy And His Gang (1927-1931); The A&P Gypsies (1927?-1936?); Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour (1935-1936).
