Pate began his career in 1938 writing and broadcasting a program called Youth Speaks. He also wrote for newspapers and magazines. He published a book of short stories in Australia and America. He was one of the original members of "The Youth Radio" at Sydney's 2GB radio station. In 1939, he starred in Lux Radio Theatre, and played at the Minerva Theatre and the Theatre Royal. Served in the Australian Army's SWPA unit during WWII. From the late 1940s to the early 1950s, Pate appeared on many Australian radio plays and serials. Australian screen debut in Forty Thousand Horsemen (1941), Hollywood debut in Thunder On The Hill (1951). Last movie was providing his voice for the character of Rusty in Down Rusty Down (1996).
