Bord in Odessa, Russia ca 1890; died 11/13/1943 at age 53 of a stroke. He began studying music at age eleven. At age seventeen, he immigrated to America. In 1911, inventor Thomas Edison hired him to play piano on phonograph cylinders, and several years later Edison made Katzman chief arranger for Edison's recording company.

In 1920, he became music arranger at the Witmark Music Company. He made his radio debut in 1923, and by 1928 was general manager of Brunswick Records.
