Spoiler : Louis Calhern (1895-1956) Louis Calhern was born February 19, 1895 in New York, New York, but grew up in St. Louis. He started work in a touring stock company as an extra. Just before WWI he moved back to New York to pursue an acting career. He toured again with stock.’. His career was cut short by WWI. He served overseas in the 143rd Field Artillery Regiment. After the war his firs break came in George M. Cohan’s ‘Song and Dance Man’. He became a matinee idol when he performed in ‘Cobra’. He soon began acting in films, the most notable being 'The Blot’ with Claire Windsor in 1921. He was leading actor in 'What's Worth While? directed by Lois Webber. In 1923 Calhern left the movies, but would return to the screen eight years later after the advent of sound pictures. With his velvety smooth voice he easily made the transition to talkies. He was primarily cast as a character actor in film while he continued to play leading roles on the stage. During the pre code years His memorable screen roles were Ambassador Trentino in the Marx Brothers classic 'Duck Soup’ (1933) as the conniving Ambassador Trentino, ‘Blonde Crazy’ (1931) with James Cagney and Joan Blondell, as well as others. In the 40s he appeared in such films as Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Notorious’ (1946), and ‘The Red Pony’(1949). For a time, Calhern battled alcoholism and missed out on many parts but by the late 40s he had stopped drinking. He appeared at MGM in 1950 in a singing role as Buffalo Bill in the film version of the musical '’Annie Get Your Gun (1950), as the double-crossing lawyer and sugar-daddy’ to Marilyn Monroe in John Huston’s film noir’The Asphalt Jungle’ and his Oscar-nominated performance as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr in ‘The Magnificent Yankee’ (1950) for which he was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award. He played Julius Caesar in 'Julius Caesar’ in 1953. Calhern also played the role of the devious George Caswell, the manipulative board member of Tredway Corporation in the 1954 production of ‘Executive Suite’ He died of a sudden heart attack on May 12, 1956 while filming ‘Teahouse of the August Moon’.
