His radio career went back to the early 1930s: Maxwell House Showboat, Magic Key, Palmolive Beauty Box Theater, Good News, Behind the Mike, Camel Comedy Caravan, Treasury Star Parade, his own daily show, and others.

Ross attended Yale and Columbia where he studied to be a lawyer, and was a national track champion. But he abondoned law, and a chance to be in the 1928 Olympic Games to pursue a career singing on radio. He began billed as "Troubadour of the Moon," and shortly he became known as, "The Idol Of The Airwaves," with his signature song "Moonlight And Roses."
