Drafted into the Army in 1944, Mitchum was assigned to the 361st Harbor Craft Company in Florida, later stationed in Hawaii where he was assigned to the GI Chorus. Screen debut playing Asa Bush in The Prairie (1947). Mitchum became well known for his role as Frank DiGiorgio, Dirty Harry's partner in the first three Dirty Harry movies, Dirty Harry (1971); Magnum Force (1973); The Enforcer (1976). Last movie was playing a preacher in the 1990 made- for-television film, A Family for Joe.
