Born in Baltimore, Maryland 12/31/1908; died 6/14/1952. Married to vocalist Maxine Sullivan (1938-?). Jazz musician that grew up in an orphanage, then worked as a Pullman Porter. He began his music career as a member of the Fletcher Henderson and Chick Webb bands. He formed a sextet in 1937, which became known as "the Biggest Little Band in the Land," with wife Sullivan as vocalist.

Kirby arranged and provided music for radio programs including Flow Gently Sweet Rhythm for CBS (1940-1941); Duffy's Tavern for CBS (1941-1942). His sextet appeared on one "One Night Stand" AFRS program in 1944, but his career had pretty much ended in 1942. He tried a comeback in 1950 which failed.
