Spoiler : Born in Washington, D.C.; found dead 12/10/1999 at age 55 in his Gaithersburg, Maryland home. Hickman began his radio career while still attending St. John's College High School at Washington's WRC where he produced The Joy Boys with hosts Willard Scott and Ed Walker. Attended Belmont Abbey in North Carolina, graduated from the American University. Producer for the American University radio station WAMU, where I met him during the middle 60's when he was working in the production of my father's (George L. Mercer) program, Jazz Anthology. Hickman went on to producing-hosting Recollections which later became The Big Broadcast, WAMU's longest running radio program. In 1994, suffering from failing health, Hickman donated his complete OTR collection to the American University.

Spoiler : John Hickman was my cousin. Sadly, I did not know of him until after his death. From the little that I have learned, I found him to be an amazing collector of railroad memorabilia, antiques, as well as music and radio broadcast equipment.
