Married and divorced to actress Shirley Temple-Black (1945- 1949); dancer Loretta Combs (1951-2000 her death). Agar was the oldest of four children of a meatpacker. His father died in 1935, and his family moved to Los Angeles. He was a twenty-four year old Army Air Corp sergeant when he married seventeen year old Shirley Temple, who was a Westlake School for Girls' classmate of Agar's sister. Following Agar's return to civilian life, movie producer David O. Selznick, who had Temple on exclusive contract, offered the handsome former GI a movie contract at $150 a week, acting lessons included. Screen debut in Fort Apache (1948). Last movie was Attack of the B-Movie Monster (2002). Character actor on television from the 1950s until the middle 1980s.

Spoiler : During the 1950s and 1960s, Agar played leads in some two dozen science fiction movies, from the 1970s until his death, he was a frequent guest at science fiction conventions. Agar sold insurance, and for many years promoted Brunswick's senior bowling program to supplement an acting income generated by small parts in film and TV.
