Spoiler : Adams, Joey (birth name was Joseph Abramowitz) Born in Brooklyn, New York 1/6/1911; died 12/2/1999 of heart failure at the St. Vincents Hospital in Manhattan, New York. Married and divorced before marrying actress (New York Post celebrity gossip columnist) Cindy Heller (1952-1999 his death). Adams worked in vaudeville while attending City College, which he quit three months shy of graduation in 1931 (City College gave him an honorary "Doctor of Comedy" degree in 1951). Adams' first big break came in 1941, when he began performing at Leon & Eddie's nightclub on 52 Street. Adams became close to former New York City mayor, Fiorella H. La Guardia, described himself as his adopted son, protege and mascot. La Guardia took him under his wing from an early age and "taught him a lot of philosophies that he followed in life." Adams had a syndicated joke column in The New York Post for more than twenty years and wrote more than 40 books including From Gags to Riches and The Joey Adams Encyclopedia if Humor. Once served as president of the American Guild of Variety Artists.
