Lunceford, Jimmy (James Melvin Lunceford) Born in Fulton, Mississippi 6/6/1902; died 7/13/1947 in Seaside, Oregon. Educated at the Fisk University and City College Of New York. Lunceford began his career as a teacher at Manassas High School in Memphis, then he became a saxophonistand flutist with bands of Fletcher Henderson and Wilbur Sweatman. In 1927 he formed his own band called The Chickawaw Synopaters.

He began his radio career with his band on stations WHK and WTAM in Cleveland, Ohio, then moved to stations WBEN, WFBI and WHAM in upstate New York. IN 1934, his band was booked into New York's Cotton Club and they were featured in remotes originating from station WMCA, which was broadcast on NBC. Lunceford's band was also featured on band remotes from the Southland club in Boston, Massachusetts.
