Born in South Shields, Durham, England 3/12/1926; died 9/15/2002 of cancer in Newcastle, England. Mitchell was educated at Oxford University and King's College in Newcastle. He wrote more than two dozen books, specializing in espionage novels, wrote a series featuring British agent David Callan. George Kelley, writing in the "St. James Guide to Crime and Mystery Writers," called the Vallan series "one of the best in British spy fiction."

During his career, Mitchell was a novelist, a writer for movies and well over a hundred television programs. Writer for television including episodes of The Avengers on BBC (1961). He created several popular BBC televsion series during 1960s and 1970s. Creator and writer for BBC television series Callan, which focused on the adventures of a lethal government agent (1967-1972); When the Boat Comes In, a gritty Depression-era drama that was set in Mitchell's native Newcastle (1976-1977).
