Born in Lima, Ohio 5/23/1920; died 9/8/1993 of cancer in San Diego, California. Married and divorced several times, including composer/arranger Frank DeVol (1991-1993 her death).

O'Connell was one of the best known big band vocalists that made her radio debut as a teenager on a local station in her home town. She became a singer with Jimmy Dorsey's band in 1939, and was the winner of the 1940 Metronome poll as the top female singer. She appeared on many radio band remote broadcasts with the Dorsey band.
