He was a fellow student with Kay Kyser at the University of North Carolina. Hal played alto sax and clarinet.

Spoiler : Kemp, Hal (birth name was James Harold Kemp) Born in Marion, Alabama 3/27/1904; died 12/21/1940 of pneumonia two days after an auto accident that happened 12/19/1940 while driving to a job in San Francisco. While driving in fog, his auto was hit head on by a truck in Madera, California. Married and divorced to Bessie Slaughter (1932-1938); Martha Stephenson (1938-1940 his death). Kemp, an alto sax player was famous during his short career. Kemp's band was twice voted by Metronome readers as the "Best Sweet Band in America" in the late 1930s. He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1992.

Spoiler : Kemp and his band played at Chicago's famous Blackhawk Restaurant from 1932 to 1934. During that time, the band was featured on Monday Night Midnight Fliers over WGN-Radio.
