Born in Rochdale, England 1/9/1898; died 9/27/1979 of bronchial pneumonia in a Capri, Italy hospital. Married and divorced actor-writer Archie Pitt (?-?); actor-director-producer Monte Banks (1939?-1950 his death). On stage and screen in England before she came to America in 1930. Hollywood debut with Sally In Our Alley (1931). Became one of the highest paid actors in Great Britain (top box-office draw there).

Host of The Gracie Fields Show, first on NBC-BLUE (1942-1943); The Gracie Fields Victory Show on Mutual-Radio (1943-1944); NBC summer program (1944); ABC (1944-1945); Mutual-Radio (195-1953). Always signed off her programs with her signature tune, "Now Is The Hour."

Guest star on many television programs including The U.S. Steel Hour for ABC (1953). Shortly before her death in 1979, Fields was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (the female equivalent of knighthood).
