Spoiler : Born in New York City 1/14/1920; died 2/8/2005 following a long illness of heart failure at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He earned a math degree from Dartmouth and a master's in journalism at Columbia. He began his broadcasting career at WQXR- New York in 1942. In 1944, he joined CBS as a radio news writer, soon rising to night editor.

Spoiler : He began working in television when it began in the late 1940s, first appearing on camera analyzing caucus results for Harry S. Truman at the 1948 Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, which was the first televised national political convention. In 1949, armed with a 16- millimeter camera, and a recording machine, he traveled to Asia, sending CBS the first sound and film material from abroad of Vietnamese attacks against the French in Hanoi, Communist jungle warfare against the British in Malaya and border raids by Communist North Koreans. By the time he returned in 1950, he was appointed as a full-flegded CBS News correspondent.

Spoiler : At the outbreak of the Korean War, he was assigned to follow the troops, which he did until fighting ceased three years later. Herman covered every presidential nominating convention from 1956 to 1980. White House correspondent during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. Capping his years of covering the White House in 1963, he worked twenty hours straight reporting the aftermath of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Moving to general assignments, he delivered the first broadcast report of the Watergate break-in at Democratic Party headquarters in 1972.

Spoiler : Herman was the sixth, and longest moderator for Face The Nation on CBS-TV (1969-1983). CBS, had a policy that when a worker reached 65 years of age, they could no longer work at CBS. That rule is what forced Walter Cronkite out in 1983. Herman was so highly respected at CBS, that when Herman turned 65 in 1983, leaving Face the Nation, an excutives at CBS told the Washington Post, that "although George is nearing 65, he can work at CBS as long as he wants to." Nevertheless, Herman was forced out in a belt-tightening that cost 70 news positions in July of 1986, and he retired at the end of his contract in January of 1987 after 43 years of service to CBS.
