He joined ASCAP in 1942, and composed tunes including What is Love?; Twilight in Granada: Pig Latin Song; Nettie, Nitwit of the Network; What a Beautiful Morning; Good Evening.

Teamed with Ralph Dumke on "The Sisters Of The Skillet" (the Quality Twins) for WGN-Chicago (1928); the NBC and CBS Radio Networks (1930- 1937). Co-host with wife (Poly Smith) on the NBC-BLUE and ABC-Radio programs Ed and Polly (1943-1944); Ladies Be Seated (1943-1944). Host of radio programs including The Ask-It Basket on CBS (1940-1941); The Colgate Spotlight on CBS (1941); one of several for Meet The Missus on CBS (1944-1950).

East and Smith appeared in the 1941 movie short, "The Kitchen Quiz, Number 2. East became an actor in movies briefly, including playing an uncredited role in Jiggs and Maggie in Jackpot Jitters (1949); Hank in The Baron of Arizona (1950); the blacksmith in Wyoming Mail (1950); morgue attendent in Mrs. O'Malley and Mr Malone (1951); Mr Nash in Stop That Cab (1951).
