McCarthy, Clem (birth name was Charles Louis McCarthy) Born in East Bloomfield, New York 9/9/1882; died 6/4/1962 of Parkinson's disease in New York City. His father was a horse dealer and auctioneer. He wanted to be a jockey, but grew too tallk, so he became a handicapper for daily horse racing papers, including the Morning Telegraph and the Daily Racing Form.

He joined KYW-Louisville, Kentucky in 1928. In 1929, he began his long caeer at NBC in Chicago, Illinois. McCarthy always opened his programs with "r-r-r-r-racing fans, this is Clem McCarthy." Sportscaster for horse racing that was able to deliver 224 words-a-minute in a gravely voice. He covered the Kentucky Derby on radio (1928-1950).

During the 1930s, he was a sportscaster at New York stations of WINS and WMCA. From the 1930s to the late 1940s, he also called fights. Announcer for Harness Racing on the NBC and ABC Television Networks (1949-1958). Commentator on Gillette Summer Sports Reel for NBC-TV (1953).
