After college was a reporter for the Charlotte News, and won an Ernie Pyle Award in 1956. The Pyle Award brought attention from John Daly (then director of CBS News) who offered him job at CBS-New York, and he joined CBS-Radio News as a $135 a-week Newswriter for the 12 to 8 am shift in 1957, then became a writer for Edward R. Murrow, and Douglas Edwards CBS-News. Was the youngest CBS correspondent ever hired at the time. He became the anchor for Eyewitness To History (1960-1963), then was a news correspondent (1960-1967). Host for On The Road With Charles Kuralt (1967- 1978). Narrator for CBS News Adventure in 1970. Reporter on Who's Who in 1977. Host for Sunday Morning (1979-1994). Co-anchor of the CBS Morning News (1980- 1982). Host of The American Parade in 1984. Co-host of America Tonight (1990- 1991). 1969 Emmy Award for On The Road.
