Born in Three Rivers, Michigan 6/4/1917; died 10/3/1985 of cancer in New York City. Married to actress Louise Allbritton (1946-?). Rhodes scholar at Oxford in 1940 when he almost joined the British Army, but instead joined the United Press in London. He was hired by Edward R. Murrow as a CBS-Radio correspondent in 1941, then stayed with CBS until his retirement. Winner of a 1943 Peabody Award for his coverage of the 1942 Allied invasion of North Africa.
