Spoiler : Born in Kansas City, Missouri 8/14/1914; died 5/3/1978. Journalist for two Kansas City newspapers, and a bureau chief for Uniter Press before he began his broadcasting career. He was recruited by Edward R. Murrow in 1942 to work at CBS, and was assigned to Moscow the same year. He covered the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, the Philippine Island Campaign, the surrender of Germany in Europe, the surrender of Japan, and the 1946 Bikini Atoll bomb tests in the Pacific as an eyewitness, the Berlin Blockade, and on the Korean War. Later he was assigned to Rome by CBS. He joined ABC in November of 1963, just in time to cover the swearing in of President Johnson following Presdient Kennedy's assasination.
