Anna May Wong (Wong Liu Tsong) Born Los Angeles, California, January 5, 1905 Died Santa Monica, California, February 5, 1961 Age 56 (cirrhosis) First Asian mega star in Hollywood. She is said to have announced for a professional minor league baseball game on radio in 1924. Anna was on many radio shows in the late 1930s and throughout the '40s. The only shows surviving are a couple of episodes of Fred Allen, Campbell Playhouse, and Bergen-McCarthy.

Her story is SO sad -- a movie star, but never married her love because well into the 1930s Whites could not legally marry Chinese. :( The prejudice she met in her life was sickening, perhaps more so because we're used to black being abused for their race, but not so much Chinese and other Asians.

I adore her. Hollywood gave her short shrift but she did well in Europe for a time. She was also very intelligent and spoke 7 languages.

Anna May Wong and Josephine Baker, two American women who left for Europe. . Wong left for Europe in the hopes of finding better roles than she had had in Hollywood. "I was so tired of the parts I had to play. There seems little for me in Hollywood, because, rather than real Chinese, producers prefer Hungarians, Mexicans, American Indians for Chinese roles... I was so tired of the parts I had to play. Why is it that the screen Chinese is always the villain? And so crude a villain, murderous, treacherous, a snake in the grass." Anna May Wong photographed here by Otto Dyar in 1932, was born Wong Liu Tsong, she was an American actress, considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star, as well as the first Chinese American actress to gain international recognition. Her long and varied career spanned silent film, sound film, television, stage, and radio. Wong dropped out of Los Angeles High School in 1921 to pursue a full-time acting career. At the age of 17, she played her first leading role, in The Toll of the Sea. which was loosely based on Madama Butterfly.

At the age of 19, Anna May Wong was cast in a supporting role as a scheming Mongol slave in the 1924 Douglas Fairbanks picture The Thief of Bagdad. Playing a stereotypical "Dragon Lady" role, her brief appearances on-screen caught the attention of audiences and critics alike. The film grossed more than $2 million and helped introduce Wong to the public.

In 1926, Wong put the first rivet into the structure of Grauman's Chinese Theatre when she joined Norma Talmadge for its groundbreaking ceremony. Wong left Hollywood in 1928 for Europe. In Europe, Wong became a sensation, her last silent film, Piccadilly, (1929) was the first of five English films in which she had a starring role. The film caused a sensation in the UK.

While in London, Wong was romantically linked with writer and broadcasting executive Eric Maschwitz, who wrote the lyrics to "These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)" as an evocation of his longing for her after they parted.

Wong returned to Britain in 1933, where she stayed for nearly three years. In addition to appearing in four films she toured Scotland and Ireland as part of a vaudeville show. She also appeared in the King George Silver Jubilee program in 1935. This is my colourised version of a the 1932 black, and white studio picture, but I have posted a comparison image showing the original photograph at the top of the comments.

she repeatedly ran into a double crunch, in getting roles: She was considered either "too Chinese" or "not Chinese enough". Also, under the official Hollywood rules of the time, she was disallowed from kissing any male of a different race -- which obviously further limited her ability to obtain movie roles.
