Old Time Radio Downloads > Quiz > Truth Or Consequence
Truth or Consequences was a radio quiz show that aired on NBC from 1940 to 1956. Hosted by Ralph Edwards, the “Truth” portion involved the participants answering an off-the-wall question in just two seconds. The questions were in fact formulated in such a way that the participant would not be able to answer it. In cases the question was answered correctly, there would be two or three follow-up questions. Basically, the idea was to make the participant go to the “Consequences” part of the show, where he or she would be asked to perform silly, embarrassing stunts. Each episode ended with the participant being reunited with his long-lost relative.
The show was such a huge hit, that it had its TV adaptation which ran from 1950 to 1988. Apart from Edwards, other talents who became the show’s host included: Jack Bailey, Bob Barker, Bob Hilton, and Larry Anderson.

1 Response to Truth Or Consequence
Some time between 1947 and maybe 1952 Truth Or Consequences held a contest where the question was "What is this sound?" The answer was a theremin. Each week TorC would call one of the listeners who sent in their phone number to guess what the sound was. Of course, most people said "A woman singing." Few people at that time had ever heard of a theremin, so the contest went on for some time (maybe four to six months?). Eventually one listener came up with the right answer. At this time, looking back on it with a jaundiced eye, I suspect that the successful listener was a stooge to end the contest because it would have been very unlikely for ANYONE to answer the question and the chances of picking a knowledgeable person out of all the entries would have been infinitely small. At one call per week, it should have taken a gazillion years to find a knowledgeable listener. Anyway, I would like to know the dates this contest aired. I am going to give a talk on the theremin and I would like to give a personal history of my fascination with it. Thanks for whatever you are able to come up with.
