Old Time Radio Downloads > Drama > Radio City Playhouse
Radio City Playhouse was a 30-minute live drama which started airing from July 3, 1948 to January 1, 1950. In its 2-year run, it was among the last long-running series of NBC. Radio City Playhouse consisted of three seasons, which usually featured a delightful mix of drama classics and contemporary radio plays. The performers were veterans of radio and stage actors from New York. In this anthology, NBC also hired those who have excellent voicing skills and talents in technical direction, as well as in writing.
The program was "sustained", meaning the production costs were shouldered by the network and not by a sponsor, as it didn’t have any. Harry W. Junkin, the director and Richard McDonagh, the producer, prefered literary works rather than genre plays, which were required among radio networks. Taking advantage of this freedom, the two presented plays ranging from quirky comedy to taut drama.
